"I listen to a lot of stuff people give me on the road. Everybody has a CD now, so there's always a lot of stuff.
One out of every ten records is good, one out of 20 is really good, and once a year or so, I hear someone new and I think, 'This person will have a life in music that will affect other musicians and touch a lot of people.'
I've heard several pianists on recordings that I really dig lately, ones who are for now as of yet off the radar. There's a pianist out of Boston who made a beautiful record for the Fresh Sound label called 'Sketch Book'; his name is Vardan Ovsepian".
A propósito de «Sketch Book» diz ainda Brad Mehldau: "The writing is beautiful and the texture is great with the voice and piano. There's a unifying element to the compositions throughout, so the listener can really go on a journey with all of you.". Vardan Ovsepian, pianista/ compositor nascido na Arménia, estudou no Yerevan State Conservatory, Estonian Music Academy, Helsinki Jazz Conservatory e na Berklee College of Music.
Lecciona na escola The Musical Suite em Newburyport, Mass, e tem actuado e ensinado master classes na Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, Maine Jazz Camp [ME], Towson University [MD], Susquehanna University [PA], Bucknell University [PA] e Wheeler School [RI].
Ovsepian actua a solo e com formações que já incluíram músicos como Mick Goodrick, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone e Hal Crook.
Gravou discos para a editora, com sede em Barcelona, Fresh Sound New Talent incluíndo «Abandoned Wheel» (piano solo), «Sketch Book» (quarteto com o convidado especial Mick Goodrick), e «Akunc» (quarteto com o violoncelista Agnieszka Dziubak). "Having had the chance to play with him, (and to record with him) I can only say that he is «the real deal, and the whole package»", diz o conceituado guitarrista Mick Goodrick.
